Morethan thirty-five years after it first aired, The World at War remainsthe preeminent television documentary series about World War II. Intwenty-six hour-long episodes it attempted to give an authoritativeoverview of the entire war from the rise of Nazi Germany in 1933 to theoccupation of the defeated Axis powers in 1945 and beyond. Although thisBritish series was exceptionally well-researched, it was a product ofthe Cold War. Though acknowledging that the Eastern Front accounted forthe largest numbers of Allied and Axis casualties by far, the seriesdevoted just three hours to the epic clash in the East. This cursorycoverage of the Eastern Front can be chalked up to a lack of access tothe Soviet and Eastern European archival materials and eyewitnessesstill locked behind the Iron Curtain when The World at War was made.

In1997, some twenty-four years after The World at War aired and six yearsafter the fall of the Soviet Union, another British televisiondocumentary series returned to the subject of the Eastern Front. Withnew, previously unavailable, access to Russian and Eastern Europeanarchives and eyewitnesses, the ten-part series Russias War: Blood Uponthe Snow finally achieved the depth of account of the Eastern Frontmissing from The World at War.

Based upon the book of the samename by British historian Richard Overy, Russias War: Blood Upon theSnow was narrated by Nigel Hawthorne (Sir Humphrey Appleby from YesMinister and Yes, Prime Minister). Over ten 52-minute episodes, theseries provides an accounting of the war together with its antecedentsand post-script, beginning with the rise of Stalin in 1924 and endingwith his death in 1954.

#1: The Darkness Descends

Lenindies and leaves behind a power struggle for the leadership of the Sovietempire and a fatal warning against Stalins ambition. Nevertheless,Stalin rises to power and begins his war against the Soviet people: anassault on the peasantry and mysterious assassination of politicalrivals, and a disastrous purge of the Red Army on the eve of war withGermany. Closed captioned.

#2: The Hour Before Midnight

Hitlerbecomes more aggressive. In Spain, Fascism and Communism face eachother for the first time, while the purges in the Soviet Union reach acrescendo. Stalin plans the most astounding about-face
of the century. Hitler and Stalin become allies, leading to the invasion and partition of Poland. Closed captioned.

#3: The Goths Ride East

TheGermans invade the Soviet Union, leading to chaos and confusion as theRed Army falls back. Minsk, Kiev and Smolensk fall. Stalin signs theinfamous Order 270, branding captured Soviet officers as traitors andcommitting their wives to forced labor. With the first snow, theWehrmacht arrives at the gates of Moscow. Closed captioned.

#4: Between Life And Death

TheGermans are at the gates of Moscow. The winter closes in and starvationclaims thousands of lives in the besieged city of Leningrad. The RedArmy counterattacks on the Moscow front. Closed captioned.

#5: The Fight From Within

Duringthe war in the occupied Soviet Union, many oppressed Soviet citizenswelcome Hitler, but their enthusiasm is short-lived as his plans arerevealed. The Partisan resistance begins without Stalins
support. Then, as he begins to accept the Partisans, he provides them with supplies. Closed captioned.

#6: The Cauldron Boils

TheWehrmacht thrusts south towards the oil fields of the Caucasus. On painof death, Stalin specifically prohibits any retreat on the battlefield. The formation of the infamous Penal Battalions starts and the battlefor Stalingrad begins. Closed captioned.

#7: The Citadel

Duringthe spring stalemate, all eyes turn to Kursk. Soviet war production, now moved out of the reach of German bombers, increases dramatically. The Germans prepare to meet the Red Army on the plains of Kursk. This isthe greatest tank battle in the history of warfare. Closed captioned.

#8: False Dawn

1944is the year of victories. After a 900-day siege, Leningrad is finallyliberated. The Red Army pushes westward and begins to retake theterritories occupied by the Germans for so long. Once again, Stalin hasplans for the people who suffer under the occupation. Closed captioned.

#9: The Fall Of The Swastika

Germanyis now on the brink of defeat. As the Red Army approaches Berlin,Hitler mobilizes both young and old to defend the doomed city. With thefall of Berlin and the death of his old enemy, Stalin turns once againto the control of his own people. Closed captioned.

#10: The Cult Of Personality

Stalinis praised by his people for the victory he alone claims. As old agecreeps up on him, Stalin obsessive paranoia continues the persecution ofhis people. His plans for territorial expansion are blocked by thethreat of the atomic bomb. The Cold War prevails. In 1953, Stalin dies.Closed captioned.

Historical footnote: The paranoia and cruelindifference of Stalin to the plight of his people are emphasizedthroughout the series, but just because youre paranoid doesnt meanpeople arent out to get you. For example, in the final episode Stalins1952 prosecution of Kremlin physicians for plotting to poison him isdismissed as delusional paranoia, yet in 2003 (six years after thisseries first aired), a joint study of Russian and American expertsconcluded that Stalins eventual death by brain hemorrhage probably wascaused by poison. So Stalin may have been wrong about who was or wasntplotting to kill him, but he was prescient about his fate it seems.
